Assignment 3

Art 97 / Beginning Electronic Art

Image and Text

Converging Spaces: Image/Text

In this assignment, we’ll be looking at text and a range of experimental image effects. You can use any of the techniques learned in the assignment (or others) in any combination, to create your project. Choose the techniques that best suit your concept and visual/aesthetic approach

Contemporary artists have sought to subvert the image / text language of advertising, or have explored the experimental potential of text/image correspondence. They have used language to create unexpected and challenging connections between the meanings of paired words and images.

Brief:
Create at 3-5 final works (and 10 developmental studies) within which you juxtapose image and text in a way that is not obvious, but rather forces the viewer to discover new associations or hidden meanings. Use word and image together to create unexpected visual or conceptual correspondences. The works should either obliquely reflect, or subtly contradict the obvious associations with the text. The text component can be very subtle or very overt. The works you create should relate to each other.

What I'm not looking for:
"Hallmark card" sentiments
Graphic designs for products or posters
Slogans or soundbites without a fully developed and thoughtful concept

In this assignment you are not limited to working in a static form, or in two dimensions. If you would prefer to make something that is sculptural or site-specific, or uses motion you can do so. Or you can work entirely with Photoshop and with 2D.
