PHOTOGRAPHIC ARTWORK IDENTIFICATION
Whenever possible use the following convention for identifying all photographic works of art:
ARTIST - TITLE - MEDIUM - DATE - DIMENSIONS.
ARTIST: Who made the negative? Who made the print? Is it anonymous? Is it attributed to a group or a company rather than an artist?
TITLE: Was it given by the artist? Was it added later by viewers or scholars? Is there identification information on the negative?
MEDIUM: Process? Negative? Print? Direct positive? Combination of media?
DATE: Exposure date? Date of printing? Vintage print? Later re-print or estate print?
DIMENSIONS: Two dimensional measurements in inches or centimeters. Height before width. Three dimensional?
Please consult Sylvan Barnet, "A Short Guide to Writing about Art.", pp. 94 - 96 for an elaboration of the above.
